This post has given me such anxiety. It’s easy for me to talk shop – tutorials, technology, public relations and social media. But a personal chat? A heart-to-heart? Gah! Bear with me today, will ya?
Not all that long ago I was a single girl in the midst of a great career (you know, the type you set your heart on and dream of), coming off my most recent “trip of a lifetime” and already started planning the next.
Had you suggested to me that today, I would be helping raise an intense preteen, a brilliant eight-year-old and an audacious five-year-old, I may have laughed in your face. (Any step-parents out there?)
But, here we are…Instead of trying to please a corporate board room or land my client on the Today Show, I am working a far less intensive job and am practically standing on my head to get approval from three little kids.
(Side-note: This. Is. Hard. In fact, there is a part of me that thinks all never get it right…and when do I get my raise? This is far more difficult than working a 9-5. )
I was a part of the boy’s lives for over a year and a half before I got a true, independent, unprompted “I love you” from all three. The funny thing? It came when I least expected it…Over Happy Meals at McDonald’s.
You might think that I bribed them with highly coveted Happy Meal toys (I am not above that at this point – see photo), but the words were pure…
Since then, McDonald’s has become a special place for us. Sure, they love it because of the little collectible toys, chocolate milk and the play land, while it has a bit more significant meaning to me, but it’s still the place we all go for a truly happy meal.
Needless to say, I was thrilled to be invited to meet Jan Fields, president of McDonald’s USA, last summer and learn more about the new, healthier Happy Meals McDonald’s was planning to launch.
(Yet another side-note: Jan is brilliant and I was absolutely enthralled with her personal story.)
(Forgive my semi-awful photo here and appreciate the sentiment. There’s only so much you can do with zoom on the i-Phone.)
The new Happy Meals will now be served with fruit and french fries (you will love the tiny little boxes), unless parents ask for a double portion of either side. The meals also come with a choice of 1 percent milk or fat-free chocolate milk.
Now when the boys and I go on our “dates” to “a fancy place of their choice” (which happens to be McDonald’s every time), I feel a bit better about the healthy happy meal they are enjoying and I actually quite enjoy the options available to me!
Last week I was able to join a few friends at the launch of the new Happy meal in Utah at the Centerville location. It was such fun to sit down and chat with good friends while the kids played…It even made me feel like a “real mom” for a moment.
I am really curious. Do you have something of a special place you take your kids to? I am so interested in what others are doing with their kids…
Have I rambled long enough? Yes I really think so. Hope you and your family have a “happy meal” of another sort this week. I am so very grateful for all of you. Enjoy your Thanksgiving Holiday!
