Laundry Room Remodel Step No. 1

One of the first rooms we’ve set out to tackle in my grandma’s house is the laundry room. A laundry room remodel probably doesn’t sound like the most obvious choice, but the room was in such bad shape it REQUIRED the attention.

Let me show you…

The flooring in the room was a mess. A high traffic, often humid area, it was covered with several layers of old linoleum and grime.

Just taking the room down to it’s bare bones – no flooring made a HUGE difference. Still gross though, no?

Though the roof has been replaced more than once, the house really needs a new roof. It has water damage in the ceiling of several rooms. This spot in the laundry room happens to be one of the worse off…

There are also large cracks running down the corner of the walls like this one…

Geez, even just cleaning the walls would help a lot.

We really stripped the laundry room down to the bare bones (Why didn’t we remove the curtains? Who knows.) This is really the first time I have taken a room apart all the way down to the base floor and walls. Have you done this before?

Once the room was clear and the walls had been wiped down, the wall patching commenced…

The cracks were filled and repaired…

Finally, we textured the ceiling and provided a fresh coat of paint to the walls to finish cleaning it off…

Just taking this room down to the bare bones and freshening it up with a little paint has really already made a HUGE difference. It’s a mini laundry room remodel of its own.

The backdoor on the house is original. It’s super-cool and we’re planning to keep it around. Our next step is to paint the door with a nice crisp true white (and take down the curtains – tee hee).

We’re also trying to finalize our laundry room palette. Once the palette is finalized, we will be selecting tile, the actual wall paint, cabinets and lighting fixtures. So fun! I’d love a little feedback on the direction. If you have a chance, stop by my laundry room pinboard and let me know what you think of the inspiration photos I’ve collected.

What color would you pick for a laundry room remodel?

  1. I did a small remodel of the laundry room in our old house in Texas.
It was a little dark, dingy room. I painted it a lovely shade of yellow, and did the ceiling in yellow, just a shade
lighter. Then I made some curtains out of a blue and white floral fabric, just to give it that French country feel.
The flooring was a nasty old linoleum. I tore it up and put down a white ceramic tile with just a hint of gray in it. I also changed out the tiny white ceiling fan for a more modern brushed nickel light fixture. It made such a huge difference! The room was now bright and cheery.

  2. Wow! This looks like a major project! I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
