My Dad is a freak about cleaning floors (Sorry Dad. I’ve exposed you, but it’s totally true). My parents house is equipped with everything from brooms and floor dusters, to a battery operated vacuums and a central vac system.
I inherited my Dad’s obsession with clean floors – I have a tendency to pull out the vacuum everyday. As a result, I consider myself something of a vacuum snob connoisseur.
So when Oreck contacted me about reviewing their new Magnesium vacuum cleaner, I was more than happy to give it a go.
You might not have known about my obsessive-compulsive floor cleaning genes, but if you follow me on Instagram you probably know that I have a super – naughty awesome beagle named Jersey.
She’s an inside dog and her favorite thing to do is roll around on my nice rug and burrow under the pillows on the couch (see guilty “I’ve been caught” look below).
The biggest problem with this? The fur ALL OVER my house. Seriously, it’s a miracle she’s not some strange breed of hairless beagle. Drives me crazy!
You’ve heard of dust bunnies? Well they’ve got nothing on beagle fluff the size of small tumbleweed wafting around my house. Not exaggerating.
Cleaning the floors to my standards is always a process. It goes something like this…
- Sweep hardwood floors (if I vacuum first, the hair just flies around)
- Vacuum hardwood floors
- Dust mop hardwood floors
- Vacuum any stray beagle hair off hardwood floors
Takes a good hour.
Oreck Magnesium Vacuum Review
On my first go ’round with the Magnesium vacuum cleaner I ran through the process just as I normally would, sweeping the floor up first. Here’s what it looked like (close your eyes if you can’t handle gross):
I was pleasantly surprised that the powerful Magnesium easily picked this stuff up. Even better? The fluff didn’t fly. I was able to vacuum the rest of the floor without any sweeping. Plus it picked up so well, I didn’t have to use the dust mop.
I saved so much time, I was able to not only complete the rest of the house in the time it usually takes me to vacuum just the one floor. Woot!
I’ve now used the vacuum several times and I can truly say that the Magnesium is the BEST vacuum I have ever owned.
Oreck Magnesium Vacuum Features
Here are a few of the Magnesium’s features that I found particularly wonderful…
It has two speeds for pick up, easily accessible on the back of the vacuum. The high speed is so very powerful (and just a tich loud), it almost vacuums itself. No lie. A little research on the Oreck site and I know why, this vacuum’s top airflow speed is 102 mph.
On the highest speed the vacuum picked up everything and the lower speed worked great on my area rugs.
This vacuum is incredibly lightweight, like carry with one finger, because it’s under 10 lbs.
Speaking of carrying, I have four flights of stairs in my house. The Magnesium has a great carrying handle on the back that makes taking it up and down stairs a cinch!
It’s also super thin, easy to store and moves under (see top photo) and around furniture as needed.
Oreck Magnesium Cristicism
I currently have a bag-less vacuum. It’s convenient not to have to worry about buying and replacing bags.
Fortunately, replacing the bag in the Oreck is really easy and it’s worth the added work for the added power and pick up.
I would be ready to throw my old vacuum out the window, or use it’s fancy “design” to sell it on Craigslist, but without a hose I don’t have the ability to vacuum off the furniture.
Finally, and this is really nitpicky, I would love it if the vacuum came in other colors.

I love that you can use it on carpet and hardwood without changing anything. When I tried to vacuum on my hardwood now I always seem to get pelted by little flying bits of dirt. Ow!

Very light weight. I like the new look – although I’d prefer an all black or grey/black coloring. I’ve been an Oreck fan for years. Living in a house with 3 floors, 3 different floorings, and 2 dogs – a light weight, durable, and high suction vacuum is a must. My current Oreck is 5+ years old and still runs great thanks to the free annual tune ups. The only time I notice poor suction is when the bag is getting to full, but that’s easy enough to fix. Personally I like that they have bags to collect all the dust and junk because I hate dealing with the mess and changing out their bags is so easy.

The one thing I learned (that I really like) is that the Oreck Magnesium lays virtually flat for easy cleaning under furniture.
Wow – it is only 10 pounds (awesome for me since I had spine surgery 5 months ago and cannot lift much weight) AND works on all floor types – including tile, hardwood, and on the low setting is even gentle enough for use on Persian rugs. Woop-dee-doo – that fits all my floor types!
Great blog post that made me feel fully informed about the features of the Oreck Magnesium! I can identify with the puppy haired tumbleweed-like fluff bunnies that gather, especially on hardwood. I think it’s funny that it sometimes seems there’s actually MORE hair on my floors than on the dog herself. Not really, but it sure seems like it sometimes.
