Eek! I love decorating my home for Halloween. It ranks right up there with Christmas. Having said that, gory and gross is not my thing. I like to stick with eerie, spooky and maybe even slightly creepy.
Last year I celebrated my first Halloween in this house. I was so in love with all the color in my neighborhood and my brand new pale coral door, I focused on creating a design featuring deep, fall colors with natural items like flowers, pumpkins and hay (You can read all about it here). It was a look I was able to sustain through Thanksgiving, minus the skeletons.
Interestingly enough, the skeletons turned out to be my favorite design element. This year I added a few more skeletal guardians to my home (purchased at a deep discount last year), toned down the color and completely skipped the hay (it got EVERYWHERE).
Black and White Halloween Porch
Instead of using hay as a filler, I went with Spanish moss this year. Not only is it a lot less messy, it’s always creepy. I tucked a little moss amongst the sticks and branches over the door, in the planters next to the door and then pulled it out to the curb in the curb in the skeleton’s cauldrons.
The wreath on my door is one I completed a couple of years ago and simply adjusted to match this year’s Halloween porch decor. You can see the full tutorial for that wreath here.
The black planters were a new addition this year. I purchased them at Lowe’s. I was super happy to find a pair of substantial planters already in the shape and color I was looking for.
I stacked the planters with foam pumpkins in two different sizes, tucked a little Spanish moss around them and added some vinyl to the top pumpkin. The vinyl lettering is absolutely what made this project come together. Not only did the black add some contrast and texture to the white pumpkins, but the “something wicked” words remind everyone that this IS a spooky Halloween porch. Ha!
On Halloween we will be wheeling out Morton and his candy trolley for the kids.
I am so exited for Halloween. I can’t wait to sit out on our Halloween porch and pass out candy to all the little kids!
